:
: Cedar is pricy and hard enough to find clear, straight and
: tight-grained here, good grade SPF is easier to find and
: cheaper. Except grade 1 spruce.

finding good wood for paddles is a common problem, we have a few good lumber stores here in Upstate NY that stock high end stuff but its $$,

clear red ceadar 2x4 is over $4 a foot not bad considering a price of a paddle but pricey if you mess up the carving.

a good stick to carve will run upwards of $40.

I have one paddle carved out of a $40 piece of Red cedar and another paddle that was a $2 2x4 at the orange box store (didnt have a knot in it) I checked a whole pile of lumber to find it!

Im looking to do another paddle or two and have decided to do laminate as its way easier to get clear wood in 1X boards in pine, poplar, cedar red or white and more.
