Thought about making a folder, the original plan was to make a 10 foot canoe where the ends telescoped into the centre section, which could then be worn as a backpack. With some testing I found that for me the added weight of the hardware canceled out the benefits of easier packing.
The only problem I ran into carrying it over my head was the odd overhead branch I didn't see (and didn't drop the bow for), and some high winds when I got up on an exposed ridge (still kept it under control, just hit a few bushes), other than that carrying it on top is pretty painless.
As for the inflatables, I looked into those 4lb pack rafts, tempting, but I wanted a real, solid, canoe. Some misplaced romantic notion I think. :)
