: They are made with glass tape and epoxy on both sides. I only do
: the inside so than I don't have the tape to feather out before I
: apply the glass cloth.

I have used butt joints on a Cartopper sailing skiff, a Merganser 17W and my daughter's Ganymede. They are not as strong as scarfs but a whole lot easier and neater, and plenty strong enough for our purposes. I use four-ounce cloth, cut on the bias, on both sides, and find it virtually disappears, with little or no feathering needed. Don't use fiberglass tape, as it will leave a bulge. The taped joints hold it together during assembly, but the cloth sheathing both inside and out give it most of its strength. -Wes
