I've never used the 8 oz. fabric you're describing, so I can't comment on it. The lightest polyester I've used was Dyson's 9 oz. (no longer available) and it worked fine without any problems with huge holes. I have used Dyson's 8 oz. Nylon with the same method and had good results.
