Hi Jeff,
I stained my baidarka frame with artist colour, red ochre thinned with turps and some linseed and rubbed in with a chamois. Daler-Rowney. I think. At least that is what I have left in blue and black, the red is gone. I didn't use the blue and black in the end. The red ochre gives a slight orange cast to the red. It's on WRC.

One thing I found to be permanent is Indian Ink which I used to colour in the date I carved on the masik of my Greenland kayak. 8 years now and it's still clearly showing.
