: FWIW, I have never, ever, epoxy coated marine plywood frames. I
: don't oil or varnish them either, unless I'm going for a certain
: look. My boats fill with water on a regular basis when I
: practice rescues or whatever. I never epoxy coat marine plywood,
: in any case, unless I'm also fiberglassing it.

: It's marine plywood. The glue is waterproof. The are few, if any,
: voids. It's not going to go bad if it gets wet. Even if the end
: grain gets wet. You could soak it for weeks and it wouldn't go
: bad. I've even soaked plain old AC exterior plywood for weeks,
: with no issues.
: Can you get it to rot? Sure, with long term, constant dampness,
: etc. And some woods are more rot prone than others - like
: okoume. But, my kayaks dry out when I take them out of the
: water, and rot is just not a problem.

: That is my personal experience - other's may vary, of course. Epoxy
: coating, or not, is consistently a hugely argumentative subject
: amongst boatbuilders of all sorts, with ardent adherents (ha!)
: on both sides.

: My personal favorite quote on the subject, by the late Thomas Firth
: Jones, a long time professional boatbuilder and designer:
: "Dave Carnell's experiments have shown conclusively that epoxy
: only retards the way wood absorbs moisture, no matter how many
: coats are applied. Epoxy is more likely to keep moisture in . .
: . I would as soon paint my boat with ketchup as with
: epoxy."

Actually epoxy is "supposed" to keep the moisture content of the wood constant. So yes it's keeping the moisture in as well as out. Completely dry wood is pretty weak.
