-Aha! The method is good up to the cutting width of the blade. My saw is small, only 7-1/4 (blades are cheap!) but it can handle a 4" cut. Dividing that by the scarf angle tells me the thickest strip I can scarf: 1/2" for 8:1. A bigger saw can do better, I wouldn't trust the method with a radial saw though.
