S&G: Wood staing in prior to epoxy cover.

The ply that is currently available to me to make my S and G is so very pale/blonde/white/pine like. I would like it to be a darker wood. What can i use to stain it that will also allow clear epoxy to "stick" after staining?. I presume it is an issue of what is the solvent base? Perhaps there are other factors?

I can get coloured two part epoxy "paint" but at this stage would rather have it wood coloured.

Any advice would be welcome.

Thanks
