Here's a method or substrate that worked out easy for me on one boat.

To make the coaming I used 3", 9 oz fiberglass tape. Once the cockpit cut-out is made and you have the circumference length, you lay out two lengths of the tape on the floor over wax paper and wet them out on top of each other. I blackened them with graphite in the epoxy. The next day you will have a length of fiberglass that is quite flexible but stiff.

You can adhear that to the inside of the coaming cut-out with 15 min epoxy. I made mine go under the coaming a bit and trimmed it off later. My joint was along the side. I tapered the edge and had a 1" overlap there which I sanded smooth later.

You would later run glass around the outside and bend it on to the deck for additional strength etc. just like in Nick's book.

I did not re-invent the wheel - it's just a great usable substrate I created with the double 9 oz fiberglass tape.
