I use 16' 1"x4" clear pine (available at my local lumberyard for about $20 each.) I rip them down an inch and use that for the chines. Around here (CT), getting a 16' piece of clear pine is easy. Green oak for the ribs. You should try the Qajaqusa board for more info.
