: Hi!
: Having just finished the frame for an Iggy, Im ready to cover the thing. But
: what exactly do you use to paint the thing? I saw a video of a Shaman
: kayak being abused, and thought that fitted what I want.
: I have used Hempel Diamond varnish some years ago (2 part polyurethan
: varnish) and THINK it ended up a flexibele finish, but Im not sure..

: Which exact products do you use??

It depends on how long you want your skin to last. If you want it to be in the range durability-wise of a strip/epoxy boat then I'd definitely spring for Coelan. It's easier to apply than Skinboat School Goop, and I've never herd a report of it failing like the Goop. It's AMAZINGLY flexible. Coelan has a really good web site, and if you are in North America contact the distributor, Premapro and talk to Tony Nuskin. He knows about the Sof uses.

NOW- if you're not sure your boat is exactly the way you want it (which probably isn't the case if you made and Iggy) or if you're worried your lashings will come untied or that you otherwise want more ability to change the frame and reskin, then don't spend the bucks on Coelan. I have a qajaq that I really dig, but think would be better if I opened the gunwales a bit at the bow and changed the stem angle, but I sprung for Goop, and I haven't been able to bring myself to put a knife to the skin. I"m waiting for it to fail, but to its credit, it shows no signs except for some abrasion on the keel. Bummer, and Yeah.
