No, you can still add lines at the bow and stern, you just have to fish them through both gunwales. I just use a thinner line and a long needle made of wire to pull the deck line through. Once you pull it through, you can knot the ends together on the outside. There is nothing that requires you to keep all of your knots on the inside of the boat. With bow and stern lines, you need something on them to make it easier to slide a paddle underneath anyway, plus, you need to be able to change them.
