: I am considering the Pinguino Sport for her as the descripiton on the Pygmy
: site comes real close to what I think will serve her well. But, I think I
: might like it as well based on the article on how well it did on the
: Skookumchuck tidal rapids. It might be a fun boat to have in addition to
: my strip Spring Run.

: Has anyone build it yet and if so, can you provide any insight into how you
: think it paddles?

I had a nice long chat with John Lockwood about his new Pinguino. He described the Pinguino as, "a boat to fart around in" IIRC. A rec boat that is slower than the Tern 14. It reminds me a little of a Mariner Coaster on a diet. Maybe thats just wishful thinking but there ya go.

John quickly added that it turned out to have an interesting attribute. Its also a friendly, capable surfing boat. John said when it was given to a group of very talented surf kayakers they were both surprised and thrilled by its performance. He also made sure I understood that this is not a miniature touring boat and would not keep up with 18 foot kayaks like the Tern 14 can. Hence the rec boat label.

If I do end up building it I think it would be a fun fishing platform, surf mayhem vehicle for out in the Triangle off of Tybee, guest boat for a non paddler as well as a nice kayak to explore tight places like creeks or swamps. After our chat I think it would make a wonderful extra boat to a collection. But if I needed a smaller capable boat I would lean toward a Tern 14 or similar boat from another designer. Eric Shade of Shearwater Boats has a some interesting smaller designs. He is a nice guy and easy to talk to.

Have fun with it,

Jim
