what material simulates Birch Bark

In Response To: Skin-on-Frame: Building a Birch Bark Canoe *LINK* (John F Monroe)

So say you wanted to do something like this but don't want to destroy the neighbours tree tonite, what modernish material would simulate the birchbark, but hopefully lighter.

a couple of layers of 6 oz laid up on a flat sheet with G-Flex? Thick black roofing felt(prob not but might be close but heavy), or something similar with a woodfibre or paperfibre matrix and a slightly flexible durable bonder?
