Kind of what I was thinking. I love the look but I use mine and they get dinged for sure! Prefer to be able to bring it in the shop and repair it myself.

Other thing I wonder about it movement. Wood moves but maybe kayaks are encapsulated so well they don't move enough to matter. Just always wondered how well it will hold up long term. Varnishes have some elasticity to them. Don't know about automotive finishes.
