Hi Reg,

On cheapo dinghys I've built in the past I've used bondo that works fine, bonds ok to the wood and the epoxy covers it just fine.

Downside is the filler in automotive bondo is talc and it sucks up water like a sponge, so the filler needs to be carefully sealed with epoxy so that water can't get to it.
