Hi Tim! I don't know if this will effect your decision, but I've seen Tom Yost's instructions as more general principles. I don't see why there why you couldn't simplify the bow of the Nikumi, to make it easier for you to attach your PVC (or whatever skin you're using).

I also don't think it's that much more complicated. After cutting everything out and getting the stations attached to the strongback, it was really only a day or two before I had everything more-or-less attached.
