Registration will eliminate the "bots" but it won't have any impact on the human spammers. On the Forum I administer, I have to filter all applicants so I can ban anyone who has a record of spamming according to their IP address. The forum has a list of all info on all registered members so if one turns out to be a spammer who made it through my filtration, I can then ban their IP address, email service, username, anything I want. However, this all takes human involvement which can be a few minutes a day to maybe an hour a day depending on registration traffic.
