: Question (since I'm planning to build a Yost boat, but have not read all of
: the how-to's --but have built 2 kit boats): Isn't that a LOT of wood to
: have in a combing? Or, perhaps not, if it relates to fabric attachment?

The bottom 1/2" ring is a base plate and is part of the boat, not the coaming.
It gets skinned along with the deck. That leaves 2 ea X 1/2" rings for the
coaming with a 1/4" or less lip. I look for 1/4" ply that actually measures
less.

I use both a sea sock and spray skirt, and having 1" between the base and lip
is a minimum as far as I'm concerned for easy attachment of these items.

The sanding suggestions already stated work fine. These coamings seem a bit
large until they are completed. When finished and on the boat, they look just
good and are strong, light, and rigid. There are other coaming types found in the Folding Kayak Builders Manual that will work equally well on a wood frame.

I prefer the aluminum tube coamings most of all, both the fixed type ( Sea Glider / Sea Rider) and also the removable type (Sonnet 16 ).
