Sanding is the way to go. Do it as late as you can. Wait until you're ready to put on the fiberglass. Use a medium grit or fine grit dand paper and a gentle touch. The veneer layer of wood is not very thick. You don't wnt to go through the plastic and also go through that nice veneer.

Saran Wrap. It is one heck of a lot cheaper than those transparency films! Wax paper works too, but it can be harder to find.

Ah Ha! The idea that a more expensive material would work better -- well, now we see that THAT idea doesn't apply.

Seriously, though, that manual is a well written guide. Follow it and you'll have great boat, and a great time building it with your son.
