: I use spring clamps a lot for one-handed clamping but have found that the
: metal quickly cuts through the polyvinyl tips. The clamps then mar the
: wood, especially cedar. I can't find replacement tips anywhere so I
: thought I would ask if anyone else has found a fix for this.
Get some old bicycle tubes(should be free) from a bicycle shop and cut them to an appropriate length to slide up each jaw of the clamp, leave joined between the jaws. Now you have a clamp that can put downward pressure to hold strip tightly to preceeding strip while glueing and the glue doesn't stick to it.You may have to fasten it via tape or ty-rap to clamp jaws to stay in place. Also appropriate lengths of bicycle tube make great cinching strps for the hull or deck instead of bungies or tape. Thanks to Canoez for these ideas, which I borrowed from his Blog (paddling upstream)
