: has anyone tried Freeze-Dried Ice Cream?

Yeah. It is a very real product, and widely distributed in the US. I mostly see it in museum gift shops.

For my taste it is very sweet--almost too sweet! It is also more expensive than other snacks I might buy. This stuff came onto the market in the late 60s, and was supposedly a development of freeze dried foods used for the
Apollo moon mission. I have no proof any of this stuff ever actually got off the ground, but they sell a lot at museum gift shops--particularly science museums with any kind of link to astronomy.

If you can't find it in Sweden it may be that the fad over things tied to the US moon mission did not catch on outside this country.

I've chaparoned a few school trips to planetariums with my kids's classes, and about a third of the kids buy this stuff, and eventually everyone gets a taste.
It is a milk, egg, and sugar-based confection (basic ice-cream ingredients) with the texture of rough lumps of malted-milk balls minus the chocolate coating and the malty flavoring.

It will absorb moisture from the air, so it is vacuum packed in aluminized mylar bags--which also ties into the 'space food' mystique. Eat it fast if you open the bag on a humid day.

Despite the 'freeze' and 'ice' in the name, the stuff is room temperature, and won't cool you off on a hot day. That, and the price, seem to be the most disappointing aspects. You get your expectations built up that you'll have ice cream and what you get is something different.

I see you've linked to a site which sells the stuff for backpackers. As a high-calorie snack with a milk-egg protein base it would probably be a good snack for such ventures, but I think it is a bit pricey.

While I was typing this I mentioned it to my girlfriend, who thought I was talking about the powdered mix used for making soft-serve frozen custards. It probably tastes the same, but now I've got to get her some of the freeze dried ice cream--and I think she'll be disappointed when she tries it.
