I've built two of these things and a friend has done three. No problem with the contact cement joints or waterproofing the canvas. They tend to develop leaks at the ends, once they've been run into a few rocks and been folded a few dozen times. Easy enough to fix.

We use them on Wright's Lake (where they are ubiquitous), and Lake Tahoe. Wright's is a paddler's dream, as it is high, warm in summer, right next to Desolation Wilderness (great hiking), and is surrounded at its northern end by rustic cabins from the '20s through the '50s. No motors of any kind are allowed, the lake is shallow enough that you can wade a lot of it, and there are enough exposed rocks that you feel safe that your kids can swim to safety if they capsize. We just turn 'em loose. It's like something out of E. B. White--only in California. We camp there every year.
