I just re-read your post, I had missed the part about the pulley being located at the keel. THAT makes sense now! In my mind I pictured running the line along the underside of the deck back to the cockpit, which probably wouldn't put enough downward pressure on the cover, thus my hinge question.

Is this 'yak used for extended trips? If so, does the line coming straight down from the hatch get in the way of gear storage at all?
