Hi,

I've just installed a mast step on my latest project and thought I'd describe the process. The technique is simplicity itself.

1) Glue in a tube to for the mast step. Here I've used a piece of Aluminum from a junk shop but I've seen PVC tube used as well.
2) Make a cardboard cone around the mast step.
3) Put 3-4 layers of fiberglass cloth around the cone.

This technique can be used with plastic boats as well although the deck will need to be reinforced and as epoxy won't stick to the plastic it will need to be bolted through.

Happy Sailing
Pete
