In sailboats they would call it a "daggerboard". The daggerboard is held in a daggerboard trunk. It's a very narrow box just wide enough to accept the daggerboard. The trunk is epoxied to the bottom and extends up high enough to reach above the waterline with a little to spare. My daggerboard trunk has cleats all the way around the bottom so there is a surface wide enough for gluing. after it was glued in I reached into the slite with a wood bit and drilled thru' the bottom at each end and sawed out the excess. No leaks.

: some framing around the rudder box. Then skin the boat. Reinforcing that
: area with a piece of ply over the skin screwed to the frame to clamp the
: skin with caulking behind it. Then cutting the opening in the skin. All
: the exposed wood would be coated in epoxy of course.
