Bamboo is a member of the grass family and like grass it comes in a gazillion different varieties and sizes. The folks that made those split bamboo fishing rods somehow figured out which variety worked them. I would assume that level of sophistication would be required to build a boat from bamboo too.
The derth of bamboo framed boats suggests there is a lot of problems with the technology that haven't been solved yet. I ain't holding my breath.
