Traditionally they are only cross wise on the deck, no perimeter lines and go thru holes in the fabric and thru the gunwales and knoted inside.

Otherwise, Tom Yost's used glued on tabs to hold the lines and I've used screwed on loops of webbing for the same thing. On my modified Sea Ranger the lines are awfully hard to see in the pictures, black lines on a dark brown boat.
