Scan them and bin them. But make sure you back up the files to a computer
or disc in another building, then you will still have them if the house
burns, which wouldn't have been the case with paper...

Bill: You actually counted the books you own? You need a hobby.

I used to have a card index not only for the books I owned, but for all
the ones I had read from the library (to make sure I didn't buy books I'd
already read). The hobby I need, but don't now have time for, is to turn
that card index into a computer database and free up some cupboard space.

I haven't counted my books, but a quick look round shows 52 metres of shelf
space in the house occupied by books, not including ring binders, magazines,
four deep drawers and one large nine-drawer map case of maps and charts...
This is after I've been scanning and purging stuff for several years :-(
Some of the shelves are two-deep in books, and there are certainly some
in boxes and cupboards as well. At a rough estimate of 2.5 cm thickness per book that must be well over 2000 books - all read, some thumbed almost to
the point of falling apart (that includes two copies of "The Strip-built
Sea Kayak":)

We have a bookshelf in the downstairs toilet which, like a large chunk of
the shelving in my office, is one book-height below the ceiling. There's
ALWAYS room for another bookshelf somewhere, even if you have then to find
cupboard space for a ladder to reach it...
