Strip: Cockpit Rim

I am ready to put a rim on the cockpit combing (vertical strips) & I'm tossing up whether to go with the glass rim or timber. I think I would like to make it from timber, any suggestions greatly appreciated.
I was thinking of cutting the combing to 5/8" height & gluing strips on top of the combing parallel with the deck strips, trimming them to the perimeter shape with say a 3/4" overhang then glassing everything. Any tips on things to watch out for or am I better off laminating the rim.
