I'm sure there are lots of methods avoiding screws - nasty things. However,
I'm pretty dubious about anything that doesn't involve drilling holes and
having access to the underside of the deck. Sometime, someone is going to
help you carry a loaded boat, and it is inevitable that someone will use
the deck lines in the lift. A lot of force also gets put on deck lines in
a rescue (even if it is only a practice one:). You really do need some way
to spread the load over an area of the deck, and that really requires some
sort of deck penetration. It should be possible to build fittings into the
ply before you bend it over the boat, as long as the load is spread along the
deck (parallel with the keel) rather than across the deck (where the added
stiffness could produce unfairness when you curve the deck to fit). Someone
mentioned Maroske fittings and they would probably be ideal. My recessed
deck fittings (see the link) would probably produce too much cross-deck
stiffening, although you could always bend the deck to shape over some
temporary forms (just hold the deck onto the forms with some canoe straps)
whilst you build in the fittings, then take the deck off the temporary forms
and over to the boat and bend it back to shape as you fit it. Any unfairness
would only exist briefly during the transfer and would be unlikely to cause
enough stress to do any damage.
