Strip: when to you splice strips?

A question for you all. When do you splice your strips?

After I spliced some milled strips to length I realized I will need to scrape the glob of glue from the bead and cove before I start assembling them on the forms.

When do you do it, before milling, after milling or on the forms? And if you do it on the forms, do you clamp the splice or just staple?

Thanks all,
