Tools: Clamps for coaming?

So, I am working on my first stitch and glue kayak and am about ready to install the cockpit coaming. I was wondering what kind of clamps people recommend for this. I don't currently have clamps and don't want to spend a ton of money on them. I know some use slices of PVC pipe, but I can't imagine that would be strong enough to hold the coaming in place. The manual recommends C clamps. Would 2" spring claps (Pony clamps) work? Thanks.
