Thanks all. You're right Mike, this is an exterior strip, and there is a layer of glass already under the strip that covers the entire hull and wraps around the ends of the bow and stern. There is also glass inside the hull and a fillet along the seam at the bow and stern. So I would think, and hope, that removing about a foot or so of the tape at either end won't cause the panels to come apart. I will probably go with sanding since there is a layer of glass cloth under the tape strip and I'll just be careful not to sand through that as well!
