: Both interesting designs. But what I don't understand, on both of them, is
: that the slot is obviously significantly wider than the width of the skeg
: blade itself - so it can accomodate the bungee, or bungee and axle ends in
: Jay's case. This being so, what keeps the skeg facing straight forwards
: rather than flopping off to one side or the other and acting as a rudder?

: In Jay's case, is it that the 1.5" diameter axle is a snug fit in the
: case and stops the twisting? If so, is this a location for sand to get
: trapped and jam it all up?

: In Kudzu's case, is it that the bungee alongside the skeg makes it a snug
: fit, and you hope that will be enough to keep it stable?

: Thoughts appreciated: I'm intending to build a kayak which will need a skeg
: soon, so I'm following this with interest and this is useful stuff!

At the speeds we are at the boards will tend to follow the direction of water flow, if they are required because of wind etc. the side pressure will tend to hold them steady. If you made the slot just wide enough for the blade you'll find the blade most often stuck in that slot. Happened with sailboats and their center boards thousands of times till the slots were made wider.
