Hello Wes,
So far so good with the finish on my King, I have been paddling it since October 02. It has several coats of Automotive Clear sprayed on it, and still retains a shine even after a few trips through Deception Pass where it took a few superficial scratches which did not penetrate to the glass. I've been paddling it pretty hard out in the rough and its just now showing signs of wear along the keel. I believe I can rough up the area with a light sanding and touch it up with a few simple disposable paint brush/coats of the two part clear mix. As far as repair this is minimal for such hard use. So long as you don't plan on modifying your kayak in the near future it should be a reasonable way to go!
I know when mine was sprayed the hatch covers were done seperately a few times. I feel the edges on my hatch lids could use a little more protetion from all the use and abuse they take. Mr.Joe Greenley offered this suggestion to me: "To seal the hatche lid edges use a few coats of epoxy" before clear coating, or varnishing.
Good Luck and much fun with your project, sasha
