Well Rich, you are in good company I just completed a pair of Osprey Standards. I applied a pair of duck onlays to.the front hull of one, and an eagle to the deck of the other. I also applied a walnut veneer strip just below the sheer line. The inlay/onlay were quit simple and came out very well, see that it was the first time I tried anything like that. The onlays were applied after the saturation coat and before the glass. The walnut strip was an iron on veneer strip. I saturated all the items before glassing.
I have not tried any staining but I have read on the forum that trying to stain patterns can have problems with bleeding..
I don’t know if this helps but good luck on your next one.
