Material: Using cloth instead of wood veneer for decoration

I have seen the recent posts where Sage was adding cloth to his surf kayak and I thought this would be a great way to personalize a S&G kayak I am making. I was planning on using some sort of wood veneer at the bow and stern as an onlay.

Is there some sort of cloth that is best, or worst to use ? Sage mentions that cotton has a wet out problem. Since this will probably go between the fiberglass and the plywood, is one type of cloth better for adhesion ?
