Material: bird's mouth shafts

I am making a 9'6" bird's mouth shaft. Most articles on bird's mouth shafts seem to suggest using cedar or spruce. I am unable to find any clear cedar in my area, but can get some clear pine. I like the rot resistance of cedar, but the shaft will be protected by epoxy resin anyway.

Does anyone know of a reason for not using pine? I did a shorter test shaft and the pine seemed strong enough.
