Hello all,
I have resumed work on my S&G (SK '94 Greenland style) over the last 4 weekends. I anticipate being ready to launch in June sometime. I have all sorts of odds and ends to make including a rack for the camper shell of my truck.
Here is my question....
What is the preferred position for transporting a wooden kayak such as I am building? I have been all over the Internet since last May researching my building and have seen kayaks oriented all manner of ways.
Here are my specifics....
For the most part I won't be travelling far to kayak. Fifteen minutes in city traffic mostly 45 MPH will be the norm. Ocassionally I would make a 45 minute to one hour trip on the interstate for different paddling areas. My truck is a Dodge RAM 50 with a flush camper shell. Small truck.
Here are my plans....
I plan to make a very simple rack by bolting 2 x 4 s to my camper shell (sealing the connections of course). I have an idea of making two carrier brackets that can be attached and removed from the 2 x 4 s as needed. I don't see why they shouldn't basically be shaped like the cradles I built the boat in. I could put a piece of wood or bungee/rope across the top. I also plan to tie off the bow and stern to the truck ends with rope. I have seen people without these but I want to be careful.
So you can tell I am leaning towards orienting the boat in the upright position for transporting. I would be interested to know if that is preferred or not for a Greenland style kayak.
Thanks,
Tony
