I'm in the process of building a strip built that will be used on rivers, lakes, bays, etc....and just maybe a 260 mile marathon river race. We'll see. Anyway I certainly think there are a lot of strip built, or S & G, boats that can be used on rivers. I'm not talking about whitewater, but on what one would call flatwater rivers, maybe a few gentle rapids. When one builds a boat you have to decide if you are going to use it...or have it for a living room conversation piece...maybe put a glass top on it so the martinis don't leave rings. Mostly I'm just kidding. There are some strip built kayaks that you wouldn't want to scratch up...but if you know you're going to use it where it can get scratched...then build for it, don't put in a lot of time building a museum piece. S & G are a little cheaper and much quicker to build and can still be beautiful. Don't get the idea that strip built, or S & G, are not strong enough for whitewater...because they are very strong. It really has to do with design and the intended use. If I wanted to run whitewater I'd get one of the little plastic whitewater boats.
