Terry,

If you have a laser printer you can make use of the siliconized, non-stick backing paper from that shelf paper.

Trim the backing paper to 8.5 x 11 and print out a design on it. Get your printer to do this with the image flipped (reversed left to right)

The printer's toner will adhere to this backing paper, but just a little.

Now place the backing paper, with the image side in contact with your boat while the epoxy or varnish is tacky and the toner image will stick, but the paper can be peeled off a few seconds later. This gives an image floating in your finish, with no discernible edges.
