Material: Wood for Paddle Shafts

I've searched for Sitka Spruce in S.E. Virginia - my home area (Nick's book suggests it for paddle shafts)- and have come up empty handed. I have good access to Cypress. Has anyone used that with success for paddle shafts? How about other wood choices.
