If I could find door skins I'd use them...but I haven't been able to. Voids in door skins are rare. If I found a void in a door skin I'd just get another and use that one for something else. As an alternative I have built many kayaks using very cheap 1/8" luan paneling. Yes...yes...the stuff with the groove in it. I put the groove to the side I'm painting and fill it with a variety of goops...including bondo. I have tried many fillers...and will try many more before I'm through. Never had any problem with the 1/8" paneling...even after many years. For plywood that thin I do fiberglass both sides. I've used cheap 1/4 luan and fiberglassed only the outside, with tape on the inside joints. If I was worried about voids I'd try to fill them with an epoxy mixture, using a syringe, or cut it out and fill it with an appropriate filler, then fiberglass both sides. I usually don't worry about them, though. I do try to pick as good a sheet as I can. The 1/8" luan paneling has never had a void I detected (other than the grooves). Now...after saying all that I also say that if I was building a boat to sell, an heirloom boat, or looking for top quality I would use marine plywood. Most of the boats I've built have seen hard use and been given to friends, family, or kids (6 of them (kids)). I will continue to use the 1/8" paneling for experiments, and prototypes. My biggest problem is finding marine plywood in central Texas...without a freight charge that would tax some third world country to pay.
