In another life back when things ran properly I used to cut shake bolts. I'm not sure how long some of the wood had been down but we had to shovel several feet of duff off of some of the logs before we could start cutting. I re-shingled a roof on my first house in 1986, The house was built in 1905, this was the first time it had been re-roofed. Cedar lasts for nearly ever.
