Hi Gordon,
I live on Central Coast California, just getting done with my Guillemot.
I bought some great cedar from a small yard in San Leandro where my inlaws live. It's called Woods Unlimited and is run by a Welshman whose name escapes me.
He had a pile of perfectly straight 2 inch boards 12 inch and 8 inch wide and upto about 15 or 20 feet long. I bought three of his shortest boards (to fit in my van) 42 board feet altogether for $230.
I got the impression he would be willing to order specialty woods also if you were willing to wait.
This stuff was great, kiln dried and although it wasn't planed, the sawed surface was excellent and I ripped it up so that when I put on the cove and bead, the rough edge was removed.
As it turned out 42 board feet was about right, but I do have enough strips left to justify starting another kayak (darn!)
Good luck with the boat, mine has taken 13 months so far including setting up a shop from scratch (I've taken several breaks also!)
