I just purchased an older old town kayak that needs some work. I just finished sanding the top finish, all appears well on top. However the bottom of the boat has several cracks (not all the way through) the gelcoat (or possibly thick resin layer not sure how to tell) is very cracked and worn away in many spots. My questions is what the best procedure would be to redo the bottom. I was told to sand it, give one coat of System Three epoxy, lay down a layer of 4oz glass on the entire bottom and give several coats to smooth. Does this sound right or should I take more action? Or would several coats of epoxy take care of the situation? Any way I can get that fine gloss look as seen on new kayaks? Thanks much! Also not much money... engineering student so doing it myself and inexpensive materials a priority.

PS: Also any recomendation for paint type? Enamel? Two stage Poly? Epoxy?
