Other: replacing foot braces in an old Nordkapp

Hey all,

question: Is it possible to replace the foot braces in an old Nordkapp. The one I just acquired is from circa 1985. Instead of keepers or Yakima foot braces, it is equipped with a metal pipe. The pipe has flattened ends. The pipe is attached to fiberglass brackets which extend perpendicularly from the insides of the cockpit (the brackets have a serious of holes in them through which bolts can be fastened to secure the metal pipe. Does this make any sense at all. I hope some of you know what I'm talking about.

In any case, it's not very comfortable over long periods of time, and it's hell to adjust. I'm thinking about cutting out the brackets and bolting in a pair of Yakima foot braces.

Has anyone done this? Is it difficult. Can cutting out the brackets lessen the integrity of the hull.

Any help is appreciated.

Al
