: I LIKE the coaming recess on your stripper!! Any more pics of how it's done?
Thanks, Rob. I'm sorry I don't have construction photos to share. The kayak is a Shooting Star designed by Rob Macks. In his excellent instructions, he describes a technique for recessing the front edge of the coaming. A long curved cut is made through the deck an inch or two away from the cockpit opening, but leaving enough wood at either end to support the crescent-shaped piece, which is gently pressed downward to reveal a gap. Small vertical pieces of strip are glued into the gap, with their height tapering off toward the edges. IIRC, this is all done before the deck is glassed, just to keep things interesting. The recess was tricky to glass, and I think I probably missed an air bubble or two, but I like having the recessed coaming. This year I am going to really appreciate it when I finally learn how to roll.
About a year ago I saw Ken Katz had built his Shooting Star with the rear edge of the coaming recessed as well. It looked so good I decided to incorporate it into my own boat.
If you follow the link below, you can read Ken's original post -- it also contains a link to some photos of his Shooting Star.
Cheers,
Matt
