I used a "climb-cutting" setup to avoid tearout. With plenty of tight featherboards, I had to push the strips through, even though the bit was spinning the same direction as my feed. No launches. I don't think I'd try that with hardwood, though.

For pinstrips, I agree with the others, glue them up straight-edged, with no bead or cove.
